One-way function, but can be cracked using rainbow tables[1] and collision attacks[2]. Salting is a technique when a salt value is hashed along with a password, to prevent a known hash attack. Entries with the same password should never have the same hash, therefore salts must have unique values. They can be randomly generated for ease, and large values are preferred.
